Hosted by Heritage Christian Stables

The Northampton Driving Society recently hosted a Dressage and Combined Test (CT) Clinic at Heritage Christian Stables, welcoming over 15 participants of all ages and experience levels for a hands-on introduction to driven dressage.

From first-timers to more experienced drivers, the goal of the day was simple: make the sport approachable, understandable, and fun.

Learning the Test

Each participant received a packet featuring the Training B Test, which will be used in many local shows this season—including the upcoming NDS Combined Test on June 21st.

NDS Combined Test June 21

Lindsay LaBella led the group through:

  • Understanding the flow of the test
  • Common penalties and how to avoid them
  • Proper attire for both Dressage and Cones
  • Saluting procedures
  • An overview of Cones and the optional Pace phase

Participants left this session with a stronger understanding of what judges are looking for—and how to present a confident, correct test.

Walking the Course

Before getting behind the reins, the group moved into the indoor arena to set up a small cones ring. This allowed participants to:

  • Walk through their tests
  • Visualize movements like centerline and halts
  • Practice spacing and accuracy

Attendees were encouraged to take this concept home—setting up simple layouts to walk through tests is one of the best ways to build confidence before show day.

Getting in the Cart

The highlight of the day was getting the opportunity to drive.

Lindsay brought her stallion Pete, giving participants the chance to experience driving a full-size horse—something new for many who were used to minis or ponies.

The focus exercise:

  • Entering on centerline
  • Maintaining straightness
  • Halting accurately at X
  • Learning to judge the position of the horse’s nose

There were plenty of laughs, a few learning moments, and a lot of encouragement as participants navigated cones and worked toward that perfect halt.

Celebrating the Wins

To keep things fun and supportive, mini awards were handed out, including:

  • Best Halt
  • Most Improved
  • Newest Whip

Wrapping It Up

To close out the clinic, participants completed a short quiz to reinforce what they learned, followed by a group Q&A session to clarify questions and build confidence moving forward.

The Takeaway

The purpose of the clinic was to remove the intimidation factor of trying something new—and it delivered.

Dressage is unique in that it gives you direct feedback from the judge on how to improve. It’s truly a blend of a show and a learning experience all in one.

We hope everyone walked away feeling more confident, more prepared, and excited to step into the ring.

We’re looking forward to seeing you all at the next event!
